Edwards Deming, inventor of the Total Quality Management movement, developed the Deming Workbench. The Deming Workbench has many uses, but in the context of our message we are interested in how it helps team members find ways to reduce work task time while enabling them to perform their work assignments right the very first time. The Deming Workbench breaks down into three key components. The first component consists of the input necessary to perform the process. Acceptance of the input by the process owner (work task) is dependent upon entrance criteria. These criteria define what is minimally acceptable. The meaning of minimally acceptable is anything less than these criteria will affect the process (work task) that utilizes the input.
An experienced pipelaying contractor will know that care in making joints on a pipeline is rewarded many times over when the pipeline test shows the line is satisfactory. It is rarely possible to leave joints exposed before testing, so if a test fails it may take much time and trouble to find the leak causing it. When finally found it may be as simple as a twisted rubber ring in a push fit joint. It is not easy to make clean perfect joints in a muddy trench. The contractor can save himself money if he gives the jointer every facility to make a good joint -easy access to see the underside of the pipe spigot, buckets of water and plentiful clean rags to ensure that joint faces and joint ring are scrupulously clean before the joint is assembled. No grease or jointing compounds should be permitted other than that which the pipe manufacturer recommends. Welders also need sufficient room and good lighting to make sure welds are adequate and should not be expected to weld up badly aligned...
For non-flexible pipes of ductile iron, asbestos cement, steel or concrete it will be necessary to joint them after laying. Sufficient access is then required for the jointer to make the joint properly, and support to the trench sides will be essential in every case where there is not absolute certainty there can be no slip of material into the trench. Falls of material into trenches are a major hazard in civil engineering, and adoption of a consistent, rigorously applied safety approach is the only way to prevent accidents. The damaging weight of even a small fall of earth must be borne in mind.
The PMO can provide vital support services to help the project team members deliver a quality project faster by assisting in project kick-off meetings. For example, the PMO can educate team members on the concepts of the Deming Workbench (or other tools to reduce rework). In addition, the PMO can proactively solicit the known obstacles to achieving the project goal and deadline, and create a plan to overcome those obstacles start building team communications help define the entrance and exit criteria.
Project managers often speak a language all their own. That language has been reflected in a special class of software since shortly after the advent of computers. Project management software was developed to track activities and tasks, to facilitate understanding of the project, and to find a way to communicate that understanding to others. Project management software packages (e.g., Microsoft Project, Sciforma Project Schedule, Niku Workbench, Planview, Primavera, Artemis Prestige, and so on) have the ability to produce project reports. Although those reports take on wildly different appearances, they share common data sets regarding project work, resource allocation, precedence relationships, and cost and tracking information. They share the ability to present information in a spreadsheet format or in a series of reports. They share the capacity to modify the presentation (to varying degrees) to facilitate understanding.
Peerless Saw Company was formed in 1931, during the Great Depression, in Columbus, Ohio, to provide bandsaw blades to Ford Motor Company. It survived the Depression and by 1971, with its non-unionized labor force, it was known for its quality bandsaw and circular saw blades.
The skilled men include reinforcement fixers, steel erectors, concreters, form-work carpenters, bricklayers, pipe jointers, crane and machine operators, miners and other trade specialists. The contractor will often have a small nucleus of experienced tradesmen in his permanent employment, getting additional tradesmen through the local employment office, or advertising for them. Specialist sub-contractors or labour-only gangs are now widely used to carry out specific trade work. Labour-only gangs are self-organizing groups of workers under their own foreman or gang leader. Quite often travelling gangs
