The UML comes with a standard set of stereotypes for components:

An <<executable>> stereotype of component simply states that the item represents an executable file, such as 'program.exe', and can be individually deployed onto a node on a network.

A <<file>> component stereotype is nothing more than a physical file. However, this notation gives us the opportunity to model files and more importantly, show where files live on a network of nodes in the system we are building.

Most CASE tools extend the range of stereotypes available for components to cover those supported by target programming languages. Visual Basic, for instance, is capable of creating the following component stereotypes'.

«ActiveX DLL>>

An ActiveX server packaged as a dynamic link library.

«ActiveX EXE>>
