Resource Planning is a planning process done at the beginning of the Cost Management proces establish the costs of a project. Resource Planning requires that you determine what resources needed on your project and determine how many of each type of resource are needed.

The Resource Planning process incorporates the work breakdown structure, the scope stateme and resource pool descriptions. Using expert judgment, the project manager can determine the resource requirements for the project.

When we talk about resources in Resource Planning we are not talking about actual individual people. In fact, we won't talk about specific resources until we get to the staff acquisition or procurement processes. Instead, with Resource Planning we are talking about types of resource There are three commonly known types of resources: people, equipment, and materials. Peoplf be individuals that work in your department or your company, or vendors you hire to complete th work—basically any skilled resource. Equipment refers to items such as a forklift, a dump truck, computer, or other nonconsumable resources. Materials are things like water, power, and other consumables.

Let's examine each of the primary inputs to the Resource Planning process. The first input is the WBS, which you learned about in Chapter 1, "Scope Management," and built on in Chapter 2, "" Management." This is the same WBS that was created in the activity definition process of time management. You should have already completed duration estimates for each task. Figure 3.1 a typical WBS with duration estimates.

The second input into the Resource Planning process is the scope statement that was created it Scope Planning process. You will use this scope statement as a means of verifying that your Resource Planning has been done within the scope of what you have been asked to do.

The last input into the Resource Planning process is the resource pool description. This descript may or may not exist at your company. You'll want to create or modify it depending on what you should contain a list of the resource types in the company as well as the actual number of resou for each category. Table 3.1 shows a sample resource pool description.

Once you have your three primary inputs together, you are ready to use your expert judgment to determine what types of resources should be used on which tasks of your project. When you an through, you might apply the resource type name to your WBS or you might just create a table li Table 3.2 that shows the assignment.

The last step in creating your resource assignments involves your scope statement. Take both tl resource requirements table and the scope statement and analyze whether you are still in scopi out of scope.
