Constrained Resource Scheduling

There are two fundamental approaches to constrained allocation problems: heuristics and optimization models. Heuristic approaches employ rules of thumb that, have been found to work reasonably well in similar situations. They seek better solutions. Optimization approaches seek the best solutions but are far more limited in their ability to handle complex situations and large problems. We will discuss each separately.

Most of the readily available PC software designed for project management will level resources and handle resource conflicts, but usually with a limited number of heuristic approaches. In leveling resources. TimeLine® gives priority to activities with earlier start dates while SuperProject® uses the least slack rule, anP Primavera® will use any of several rules.
