Where Project Competencies Are Addressed

Now we will outline the essential project management skills required to achieve software project management competency. The brief explanation of the project management skills, competencies 12 through 22, will be introduced here to serve as a roadmap and as a review guide. The chapters in this handbook that more fully describe each competency are forward referenced in Table 1-4.

The project competencies listed in Table 1-4 are what most people think of as project management skills. But they are only part of the picture, as product and people competencies are important as well. In addition, they do not stand alone, but fit into a more global view. Figure 1-9 demonstrates how the project life cycle fits within the phases of the product life cycle, which, in turn, is a segment of the phases found in a typical overall business life cycle.
