What Is Software Engineering

According to Barry Boehm, software engineering is: A practical application of scientific knowledge in the design and construction of computer m programs and the associated documentation required to develop, operate, and maintain them.'—1 IEEE defines it as: a systematic approach to

the development, operation, maintenance, and retirement of software.'—'And Stephen Schach describes software engineering as: a discipline whose aim is the production of quality software, software that is delivered on time, within budget, and that satisfies its requirements.^1

We choose to use a blend of the preceding definitions to reflect the viewpoint of the software project manager: Software engineering s a disciplined, systematic approach to the development, operation, maintenance, and retirement of software through the practical application of scientific knowledge and processes.
