Most software engineering texts present the waterfall model as the source of the "conventional" software process. I regard it more as a benchmark of that process. This section examines and critiques the waterfall model theory, then looks at how most of the industry has practiced the conventional software process. In reality, although the industry has ignored much of the theory, it has still managed to evolve many good practices (and some not-so-good practices), especially when they are used with modern technologies.
