Using the Critical Chain Concept in New Product Development Teams

The critical chain concept of project management stresses that fact that current projects often fail because of bad estimates of task duration that then become outside limits for performance. These bad estimates are often made with large fudge factors to protect the task manager from failure. This approach often leads to inflated durations and project life cycles.

Critical chain places more emphasis on removing key bottlenecks in the system, and on stressing task starting times rather than task durations. More flexibility is given to team members to get the job done right and as fast as they can, rather than within an arbitrary timeline. Project leaders trim down task durations to bare bones and then give team members buffers, or additional time, to complete work if not completed on time. Starting times are stressed. Meanwhile, the project leader manages the key bottleneck in the new product development process.
