Here are the stages in instrumentation development:

Stage 1—Requirements definition

Stage 2—Detailed design

Stage 3—Prototype development (design verification)

Stage 4—Design validation

Stage 5—Production transition

As stated earlier, project reviews are scheduled at the end of each stage to control risk and make go or no-go decisions. Each of the stages has distinct entry and exit criteria and risk exposures; however, each stage will overlap in time,. For example, the detailed design activity can and will begin on certain parts of the product before all of the requirements are known and defined.

Design and development plans are prepared and updated as the design evolves. These design and development plans include risks, risk matrix information, and contingencies. This way, risk is directly integrated into planning, not a separate process. These plans guide the design and risk management process, serve as the basis for defining all design tasks, and establish program schedules that include contingencies for each design activity.
