Organizational mismanagement

New product development efforts are notoriously late and undermanaged, often the victim of bad organization alignment, excessive multitasking, and poor division of labor. Although a project may proceed on time and within budget, it may be scuttled by internal conflict and coordination problems created by weak upper management and inflexible organizational structure. Project managers must protect their projects from this development by making sure there is a top management sponsor for the project, and that organizational accountability for results is placed in the proper hands. Further and maybe most important, the organization must have a project management system in place to guide the process, to account for time and cost, and to make key go or no-go decisions about the product along the way.
