Leading New Product Development

The direction and guidance given to the new product development process requires a unique combination of leadership skills and capacities. Because new product development is inherently uncertain and often open-ended, it is critical that the leadership of the process builds trust and integrity into the team and the process. Leaders of new product development must avoid micro-managing projects; they should steward rather than control the work. The key issue is to enable the team to proceed within a loosely administered schedule and with a full understanding that their job is to provide leadership with relevant information and data for the go or no-go decision in project review.

The team is trusted to proceed without getting co-opted by the product and to avoid feeling that their careers are dependent on the success of the product at all costs. Reporting and information exchange must be open, and bad news along with good news must be able to travel up the organization freely to support project review decisions. Team members are expected to document their work and ensure that the configuration of the final product is preserved in configuration management software for inventory and production transition.
