Improved quality of work life

Empowerment is intended to allow employees to take more ownership for their jobs, and thereby improve the work experience. The assumption is that employees want more flexibility, and that change in the direction of more flexibility will make employees happier and more satisfied in their work. The underlying issue is whether the individual's quality of work life is indeed determined by having more flexibility. The personal issue here is: "If I accept more flexibility and empowerment in the project team, will I benefit in terms of the quality of my work life and work place?"

The answer is liable to be, "It depends." It depends on whether empowerment is granted to all colleagues and team members, so everyone can truly negotiate on relative roles. It does no good, and may do harm to the project team, if only some of its members are empowered. It also depends on ability and competence to perform; empowerment brings with it new challenges for creative and critical thinking, conceptual skills, communication skills, and a generally increased self-confidence in the workplace. Finally, will empowerment allow team members to really look at fundamental system and process design problems and correct them, or is the empowerment limited to narrow issues with little long-term consequence for the organization's performance? Thus with empowerment must come education and training.
