Growth to New Products Program Manager Role

Because new product development is a messy and often muddled process, the management of new product projects requires a good deal of organizational savvy and insight. Progression from a narrow, technical view of new product development to a broader, more political view is necessary in building a good program manager.

Because leadership is key to establishing an effective framework for new products, and because that leadership comes from what we call the program management level, we now explore the progression from project manager to program manager. This growth process addresses the new skills and competencies required to make the transition from leading a single new product project to leading a longer-range, multiproject program in a real company setting. While there are many gray areas in the transition from project to program, it is clear that new competencies and skills are "called up" as the focus turns to long-term programs and the broader scope needed to monitor many projects at once.
