Focus on task durations

Eliyahu M. Goldratt has written a seminal work on critical chain theory, a new approach to production and project planning and scheduling. In his book

(Critical Chain: A Business Novel, The North River Press 1997) he states that in projects where products and outputs are uncertain, e.g., new products, the focus should be on starting times, not finish times, and that most individual task duration estimates should be taken lightly. Original duration estimates should be cut in half to avoid "safety" issues created by overstating tasks to protect from failure, and all work should proceed on start dates. Work should progress as fast as it can, and managed to completed work.
