Design to Process

Design to process means that the product is not only designed to meet product specifications, but also to meet process specifications. Process specifications address the process or context of product use, and identify all the necessary parties in the whole process of successfully implementing market launch. In other words, if a company is designing a new, automated self-service checkout system for a grocery chain, the design also addresses how the system is embedded in a grocery store, how the system will be introduced to customers, how the system will be supported by employees, and how the system could change current employer-employee relations in those stores. All of these factors are process issues that can impact successful launch of the product.
