You've heard the old joke about how to get to Carnegie Hall: practice, practice, practice. It's the same with becoming a great project manager.
But there are requirements for becoming a great project manager: developing your interpersonal skills to work with the team and developing/maintaining enough technical skills to understand and manage your project's risks.
I categorize skills into interpersonal skills (the nontechnical qualities, preferences, and skills); functional (technical) skills; domain expertise; and tools/technology expertise [Rot04b]. See [WJC00] for a different competency profile.
