Information Technology

The third pillar, the information technology, is regarded as the enabler of knowledge management. It supports the capturing, storing, structuring and distribution of explicit knowledge. It enables the integration of multiple information resources (Internet, Intranet, DB, News Groups, etc.). More advanced systems even allow the creation of new explicit knowledge by analysing and combining the existing knowledge in an intelligent way (see section 5.3). The technology supports people to find and retrieve knowledge, to share knowledge and to connect people. The obstacles are often inconsistent data structures and incompatible and inflexible systems which cannot keep pace with rapidly changing business requirements. The role of information technology for knowledge management is visualised in Figure 4.
