System integration focuses on the design of system components, first by work breakdown from the top down, then designing and building components from the bottom up. A configuration management system is typically used to document the product breakdown as it is designed for testing and manufacture.
The system can be as complicated as an F-16 or a car, or as simple as a flight control surface or a car door. The system improvement tools and techniques can be used for any system—a system, subsystem, or a part. In fact, some of the tools, like statistical process control (SPC) and quality function deployment (QFD), have been used successfully for the continuous improvement of entire organizational systems.
The integration tools and techniques described in this chapter have specific application in the product design, process design, and production processes. However, these tools and techniques can be used to improve any system in the organization. They are applicable for improving whole systems, subsystems, or parts.
