The General Environment

The first step in any strategic planning process is an understanding of the general environment in which the strategy must be target and executed (refer again to Figure 3-5). Historically, the general environment includes:

• The demographic segment

• The economic segment

• The political/legal segment

• The sociocultural segment

• The technological segment

In general strategic planning, these segments are heavily oriented toward the external environment. For project management, the focus is more internal than external.
