Work Breakdown Structure

The WBS is a top-down, hierarchical list of the deliverables and the steps to produce them. The purpose is to identify the major deliverables and the final product and list the tasks to build them. An effective WBS has a level of granularity that makes estimating and tracking of tasks meaningful, usually requiring less than two weeks of effort. The WBS is based upon the content in the SOW and the input from the people who perform the work. Once complete, the project manager does estimating, develops schedules, and allocates resources. See Exhibit 1 for an example of a WBS.
