Information from both the product flow diagram and the estimating sheet has been combined with the products and tasks shown on the Y axis. The human resources are shown next to the tasks, and the dependencies from the product flow diagram are shown by arrows linking the products (task dependencies are also shown to indicate the order in which they should take place). Even though it may have been a challenging exercise, the time taken to develop the product flow diagram will have been well spent. The dependencies shown in the Gantt chart are based on the skills, knowledge and experience of everyone who participated in the product-based planning workshops, rather than the instinctive view of the project manager.

The X axis represents information not present on the estimating sheet. The timescale or duration is estimated using the various information sources. They are:

e the product descriptions;

e knowledge of the people and other resource types to be employed;

e the effort intended for those resources;

e knowledge of estimating techniques and experience in using them.

Figure 7.8 shows how the duration of product 4 was determined.
