Competent project managers

For a project to be successfully delivered it requires competent project managers. They must understand project management and have appropriate project experience. It is not good enough that they are competent specialists with knowledge of it, or pharmaceuticals, or engineering. Their position in the project may be enhanced if they are literate in the nature of the initiative, but they are employed as a project manager to manage the time, cost and quality expectations of the project's stakeholders. Project managers are like the hub of a wheel, holding the spokes together so that motion can be achieved. But they are not the only, or indeed most important, people involved in the project. There will be others such as the project's sponsors and owners who will have considerable influence.

Project management is a specific discipline deserving investment; organisations involved in a significant amount of project work would do well to recognise that.
